For most people, keeping work and home life separate is easy if you're going into the office everyday, but for some, working from home makes separating work and home life a little more difficult.

By now, most people working from home have a set routine figured out. However, it's still important to maintain a well-rounded work life balance when working from home. Taking breaks throughout the day and keeping set work hours will help remind you that work is finite and stops! You'll feel better when you log off for the day and can shift your focus to your personal life.

You can use breaks to exercise or rest, it will help keep you mentally and physically refreshed and avoid burnout. Taking some time away from your work space will help renew focus and help make better decisions with a refreshed mindset. Try going outside for some fresh air and to stretch your legs, it will also give your eyes a rest from the computer screen.

Consider taking regular breaks and keeping a set lunch time to help keep a good flow. Experiment with the length of your break to find your goldilocks time. When on a break, note how long it takes before you start to lose your attention to other distractions. Breaks longer than this timeframe will make it more difficult for you to refocus your attention when settling back down again.

Tips for things to do when taking your break when working from home:

  • Go for a short walk around the block. It doesn't have to be long, it can even be just to the end of the block and back.
  • Do some quick back stretches outside if you've been in a chair all day.
  • Walk to different parts of the house, maybe open a window for some fresh air.
  • If you have a pet, spend time with your furry friend - you can both go for a short walk or have a quick training session outside.
  • If you easily forget, think about scheduling your breaks with reminders.
  • Try to disconnect by having your lunch away from your desk/work office to create space and separation. Don't eat at your desk, the temptation to browse and check your email might be too much!

Tips for things to do on your break when working in the office:

  • Take a quick walk down the block and back.
  • Get up and go to the washroom, even if you don't have to go. It will give you an opportunity to move. Maybe take a quick walk to the photocopy/printer.
  • Five minutes stretches you can do at work: 6-Minute Office Stretches, 5-Minute Office Yoga, 5-Minutes Desk Stretches.
  • Grab a healthy snack or a cup of water to refresh yourself.

Do what feels good and works best for you!
